This is a lovely collection of traditional music from various parts of Greece, recorded between 1930 and 1959 by ethnomusicologist Samuel Baud-Bovy. There are six performances recorded in 1930 in the Dodecanese Islands including lyra and lauto instrumental duets, a couple of gorgeous duet vocals, and a couple of solo vocals. There are 16 performances recorded in Crete in 1954, featuring a wide range of vocal and instrumental music. Finally there are seven tracks recorded in continental Greece between 1930 and 1959, including solo vocals and instrumental performances on flute, clarinet, and lute. Sound is excellent, even on the earliest recordings. The booklet, with notes in English and French, has extensive information on the source of the recordings, background to the music, and a discussion of every track, and there are a handful of wonderful photos.
