Where to begin with everything that is wrong with this collection? First of all, the packaging itself is tremendously misleading. Being titled the Carter Family's Greatest Hits, you'd expect ten of the Carter's best cuts, but you'd be wrong. And with a black and white cover photo featuring Maybelle Carter and her daughters Anita, June, and Helen, you'd at least expect some of the standout tracks from that period, yet you'd be wrong again. What you will find are ten re-recorded versions of Carter classics by persons who appear to be members of their extended family, with contributions from the immediate Carter children, though there are no liner notes to say just exactly who is responsible for these overblown, tepid renditions of Carter Family songs. Whoever are responsible, they have managed to drain nearly every ounce of original beauty and poignancy from the originals and replaced them with shiny, modern country power balladry. All this adds up to a collection that will probably be fingernails on the chalkboard to the average Carter Family fan; it is definitely one to steer clear of. Be warned: This is probably not the Carter Family you are expecting.
