AllMusic Review by

GREATEST HITS is compiled from Burt Bacharach's classic first five albums for A&M Records--REACH OUT, MAKE IT EASY ON YOURSELF, BURT BACHARACH, BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID, and LIVING TOGETHER. First released in 1973, this stellar set spotlights not only his immense ability as a composer, but his superlative arrangement and production skills.

Many of these 12 songs are instrumentals, and several others, such as "Reach Out For Me" and "This Guy's In Love With You," feature only multi-tracked female voices singing the occasional snatch of Hal David's lyrics, so as not to distract from the lush layers of strings, woodwinds and brass, led by Bacharach's graceful, jazz-influenced piano solos. Others, including the definitive version of his classic "Make It Easy On Yourself," feature Bacharach's warm, distinctive voice. While other albums may better showcase Bacharach the composer, GREATEST HITS is a perfect introduction to Bacharach the performer.
