AllMusic Review by

Sharkskin's Greatest Hits 1984-2001 collects ten definitive tracks from the instrumental group's EPs, which include 1986's This Ain't No Dream, 1989's Too Cool for Words, and 1993's The Legendary. The band's sound ranges from flowing mood pieces like "7 Years Till Never," "Aftermath," and "March of the Lonely Guitars" to the brooding neo-surf rock of "Anything in Particular" and breezy, sunny tracks like "Better Than a Kick in the Head" and "Day Before Yesterday." Each song on the album features understated production values and subtle percussion, both of which emphasize Coyote Shivers' nimble, fluid guitar stylings and expressive range. A worthwhile collection of Sharkskin's evocative instrumentals, Greatest Hits 1984-2001 is also an interesting document of some of Shivers' work apart from his solo career and collaboration with Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet.
