Great Wagner Voices is a collection of historic performances from the archives of Bavarian Radio and the Munich Radio Orchestra, dating from 1963 to 1971. The singers are all legendary artists who starred in major Wagner productions of the period in Germany, and the names of Elisabeth Grümmer, Martina Arroyo, Catarina Ligendza, Anja Silja, Rudolf Schock, Gottlob Frick, Josef Greindl, Theo Adam, Franz Crass, and Ingrid Bjoner will be familiar to serious opera fans and collectors of vintage recordings. Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, Der fliegende Holländer, Die Walküre, Götterdämmerung, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, and Tristan und Isolde are each represented by one or two tracks, and the collection offers memorable scenes that are quite substantial in their content and length. While the recordings were all analog, they have been digitally remastered and sound remarkably well-preserved for their age, with surprising clarity and minimal distortion of pitch.
