The exquisite vocal blending of Theodore Vassilikos's male choir brings ancient Greek Orthodox hymns to life again, and the effect is unforgettable. Vassilikos has taken great care in researching Byzantine sacred music of the 14th to 18th centuries, successfully re-creating not only the authentic sound but also the undying spiritual potency residing within the eight chants on this maximum-length CD. While the use of limited intervals and monody (single melody lines) invites comparison to Gregorian chant, the liberal use of ornamentation is distinctively Greek. This decoration of melody gives the music a complex internal structure that captivates the ear and leads the willing listener into a trance-like state. Ocora continues to impress with the quality and scope of their releases, and this work of solemn beauty is among their finest. A superb digital recording, it comes with an informative booklet.
