A fresh look at a familiar catalog, Bear Family's 2017 compilation Great Drums at Sun presents 28 tracks cut at Sam Phillips' famed studio. The concentration isn't on songs but rather on fevered drummers -- drummers who could bash, bang, and groove. Some of these cuts have been anthologized heavily -- Billy Riley's "Red Hot," Jerry Lee Lewis' "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On" and "Crazy Arms," Warren Smith's "Ubangi Stomp," Elvis Presley's "I Forgot to Remember to Forget" are all here -- but the collection overall emphasizes the byroads of Sun. There are some unfamiliar names here -- Vernon Taylor, Ray Harris, and Jimmy Williams -- but there are also deep cuts and alternate takes, all emphasizing what a hotbed of talent Sun was in the '50s.
