This is a particularly well-rounded set that does indeed show off Buddy Tate's greatness. Tate is heard on his customary tenor plus clarinet (on "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise") and his rarely heard baritone ("Bernie's Tune"). Tate's notable sidemen include cornetist Warren Vache, pianist Hank Jones, bassist Milt Hinton and either Mel Lewis or Jackie Williams on drums; on "I Realize Now" Buddy's son Paul Tate takes a fine vocal. Other highlights include "On Green Dolphin Street," "At Sundown" and "Shiny Stockings." This Concord release gives one a fine example of Buddy Tate's musical talents from the later part of his long career.
