There are plenty of various-artist compilations targeted at the skateboard/extreme-sports crowd (or, at least, marketing departments' ideas of that demographic); most of them feature some combination of alternative metal, latter-day punk-pop, and third-wave ska, sometimes with a little hardcore hip-hop thrown in. Like its contemporaries, Gravity Games 2000: Summer Sounds, Vol. 1 is heavy on the testosterone, concentrating mostly on metal and punk. But it stands out a bit thanks to its inclusion of several artists and sounds outside of the usual suspects -- there's Fu Manchu's desert-baked stoner metal, Primal Scream's driving electronica/rock, the Hellacopters' late-'60s Detroit punk revivalism, and Smash Mouth's quirkily stylish, slightly ska-tinged pop/rock. Plus, there are contributions from Powerman 5000, the Bloodhound Gang, Fenix TX, Blink 182, Buckcherry, and Sevendust, among others. If you're a fan of this sort of sound and attitude, Gravity Games 2000 ends up being a pretty good sampler.
