Historic recordings from Deutsche Grammophon's vaults have been gathered in this seven-CD box set, Grandioso!: Great Verdi Recordings from Caruso to Pavarotti, and this is a treat for opera connoisseurs, marking the bicentennial of Giuseppe Verdi's birth. The recordings encapsulated here date from a 1903 recording of Francesco Tamagno singing brief excerpts from Otello, to Luciano Pavarotti's 1964 recording of "Parmi veder le lagrime" from Rigoletto, with many outstanding performances in between. The roster of great singers includes Renata Tebaldi, Grace Bumbry, Joan Sutherland, Carlo Bergonzi, Giuseppe di Stefano, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Alexander Kipnis, Hans Hotter, and the most famous of all, Enrico Caruso, among other legends of the early years of operatic recordings, their voices carefully preserved by Deutsche Grammophon and Decca. Naturally, the original recordings varied greatly in sound quality and states of analog technology, so this set is best suited to collectors of historic recordings and dedicated fans of Verdi's works.
