AllMusic Review by

Sam Cooke's smiling face on the cover of Gospel in My Soul is momentarily misleading, for the notes point out that the 12 songs included feature four lead vocals each by Cooke, the nimble Johnnie Taylor (Cooke's replacement as The Soul Stirrers' lead vocalist), and Cooke's idol R.H. Harris, whose place in The Soul Stirrers the young, unknown Cooke took in 1951. The confusion doesn't matter, for this is a fine record throughout....Cooke's approach to gospel singing reveals a side of Cooke which his popular hits, with the notable exception of "A Change Is Gonna Come," seldom touched. The carefree good humor is replaced by a forthright beauty and seriousness, but the signature is unmistakable.
