Goofy Greats Review

by Cub Koda

This is another ten-track, budget-priced CD compilation in K-Tel's line of collecting the great (and not-so-great) novelty singles that were huge chart hits in the 1950s, '60s and '70s. As it stands, this one is probably the best of the bunch, as only three of the ten (Clarence "Frogman" Henry's "Ain't Got No Home," the Kingsmen's "Jolly Green Giant," and the Newbeats' "Bread and Butter") are later stereo recuts. The rest of the collection features the original hit versions of "Leader of the Pack" by the Shangri-Las, "Short Shorts" by the Royal Teens, "Who Put the Bomp (In the Bomp, Bomp, Bomp)" by Barry Mann, "Surfin' Bird" by the Trashmen, "Alley Oop" by the Hollywood Argyles, "Gitarzan" by Ray Stevens, and "Chantilly Lace" by the Big Bopper. If you can get past the lamer recuts of the three tunes in question, this makes a decent little budget package.
