Clearly stating its intention in the title, Good Music to Avert the Collapse of American Democracy, Vol. 1 is a sprawling 40-track charity compilation released in September 2020 to benefit the American voter rights organization Fair Fight. A number of high-profile indie artists contributed previously unreleased songs ranging from demos and live tracks to remixes, new originals, and plenty of covers. Among its unique selections, one can hear Superchunk covering the Minutemen ("Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing"), Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold covering the Roches ("Hammond Song"), and Weyes Blood covering Joni Mitchell ("River"). Other participants, who span several generations of indie music, include Phoebe Bridgers, R.E.M., Thurston Moore, Tegan & Sara, Helado Negro, Courtney Barnett, and Sylvan Esso. The collection's beneficiary, Fair Fight, is aimed at promoting fair elections, fighting voter suppression, and contributing to voter education and reform.
