AllMusic Review by

This intriguing two-disc, 47-track blues compilation has a little bit of everything, featuring sides from classic first generation country blues players like Booker White, Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, Blind Boy Fuller and Son House, mid-era Chicago blues greats like Muddy Waters and Jimmy Reed, and seemingly all points in between, from zydeco (Clifton Chenier) to screaming electric slide guitar (Elmore James). It doesn't exactly add up to a coherent history of the blues, but it is pretty varied and balanced and also well sequenced, so the story of the blues gets told just fine all the same.
