AllMusic Review by

This digital download set of mp3s features tracks from Ella Fitzgerald's early career, most of them drawn from her fruitful association with Decca Records between 1935 and 1945. Few singers could work a ballad as well as Fitzgerald, and she had that ability right from the start, but while these first recordings are quite impressive, she didn't fully find her stride (or her amazing scatting ability) until a decade later. Casual listeners should probably dip into her later recordings first before circling back for this early material, but as the start of a long and sparkling career, these early recordings are definitely worth checking out, particularly at such an economical price.
