For this unusual project the music of the now-obscure pianist/bandleader Tiny Parham is revived 64 years after his last significant recording. A nonet headed by Pam Pameijer (who plays drums and washboard) plays 17 of Parham's compositions including such hot obscurities as "Skag-A-Lag," "Washboard Wiggles," "Doin' the Jug-Jug" and "Sudbuster's Dream." The New Jazz Wizards (which features such notable musicians as cornetist Peter Ecklund, Billy Novick and John Otto on reeds and violinist Dick Wetmore) manage to recapture the spirit of the atmospheric Parham band and on some songs actually improves upon the original versions. Highly recommended to classic jazz collectors.
