Laserlight's three-CD PATSY CLINE COLLECTION pulls together 39 of the 51 songs Cline recorded for the Four Star company between 1955 and 1960. It includes material from her very first sessions, her first hit ("Walkin' After Midnight"), and a remarkable amount of musical experimentation. Cline could have been a complete success as a stone honky-tonker, a rockabilly chick, or a dreamy pop balladeer; her producer, Owen Bradley, gave her a shot at all three over the course of the five years covered here.
In 1960 she signed with Decca and succeeded in becoming a crossover sensation before her untimely death in a 1963 plane crash. The one drawback to this Laserlight set is the complete lack of documentation. There's no songwriting credits, session personnel information, or recording dates provided, making this more of a three-disc package deal than a boxed set. Still, it hits all the important highlights and then some, from the rockin' "Hungry For Love" and "There He Goes" to the hard-core country of "Crazy Dreams" and "Today, Tomorrow and Forever," and the torchy pop of "If I Could Only Stay Asleep" and "Cry Not For Me."
