The Independents were a fine early and mid-'70s soul ensemble whose roster included songwriter/vocalist Chuck Jackson. Jackson and Marvin Yancy co-wrote most of their tracks, and they had some nice romantic and ballad hits in 1973 and 1974, topping the R&B charts with "Leaving Me." This Chuck Jackson was not related to the great shouter who recorded for Wand/Scepter. He later teamed with Yancy to crank out hits for Natalie Cole and Ronnie Dyson, while Yancy and Cole at one time were married.
