The crooning foursome known as the Four Freshmen are renowned for a distinctive manner of harmonizing. Less acclaimed as interpreters of a song's lyrics than musical masters, their techniques often revamp melodies in to jazzy, cool tone poems. The CD here, GOLDEN ANIVERSARY CELEBRATION, affirms the group as an advanced harmonic aggregation, yet this release also features solo vocals in addition to the ensemble harmonies that hallmark the Four Freshmen sound. These reveal the group to be as sentimental and moving as it is musically provocative.
The classic song "I'll Be Seeing You" is performed in the familiar way they chose to harmonize; creating a rich and vibrating tone, like some unusual pipe organ. The moody "Baltimore Oriole," features a moving solo vocal by Bob Flanigan, with the troupe piping in to add atmosphere to the pensive and brooding lyrics.
