A misleading title, since only a few of these 13 tracks went gold, and a couple are downright weak. David Porter's "Can't See You When I Want To" simply takes up space. Mavis Staples' "A House Is Not a Home" fails to excite, and besides, the song has been redone to death. However, "I Like What You're Doing to Me," by Carla Thomas, and the Emotions' "So I Can Love" represent Stax's soft side well. And the melodic "I Never Found a Girl," by Eddie Floyd, and William Bell & Judy Clay's "Private Number" are excellent midtempo shufflers. The Soul Children's dramatic "Sweeter He Is," Rufus Thomas' "Do the Funky Chicken," and Johnnie Taylor's "Who's Making Love" are definitive Stax. Goodies by Booker T & the MGs, Isaac Hayes, Albert King, and William Bell complete the collection.
