Gold Review

by Steve Leggett

Sorting through the discography of legendary Jamaican singer Gregory Isaacs can be a daunting task, since it is rumored that he has some 500 records to his credit, including compilations, and given Isaacs' amazing durability (unlike many singers who came to prominence in the roots era, he has survived seemingly unscathed into the realm of contemporary dancehall), any "best-of" collection is immediately suspect. Gold, from British label and distributor Jet Star, lacks some of his biggest hits ("Look Before You Leap," "My Only Lover," "Night Nurse"), but does include others that were ("Number One," "Border"), as well as some wonderful hard-to-find tracks like the Lee "Scratch" Perry-produced "Mr. Cop," making it an interesting, but not essential, purchase.
