Global Underground: Uruguay Review

by John Bush

Mere months after Darren Emerson exited Underworld, the Boxed label released a volume in their Global Underground series devoted to him. Emerson shows himself as a bit of a classicist, culling dance classics from over a decade in the past: Ron Trent's "Altered States," the up-tempo remix of the Orb's "A Huge Ever Growing Brain...," Lil' Louis' "French Kiss," Dave Angel's "Rematch," and Dave Clarke's "The Compass." The focus on acid techno and sequencer disco is refreshing after GU's endless parade of progressive trance volumes, though Emerson's hands-off approach and reliance on similar-sounding tracks makes for a bit of a sleeper mix album.
