AllMusic Review by

Heavy on deep selections from the Hot Wax/Invictus, Brunswick, Hi, and Contempo labels, Gimme That Beat: '70s Funky Floorfillers features just what the title indicates, albeit with an emphasis on lesser-known material. Not many of these songs were hits when they were released, but several have become cult DJ favorites, and original 45s sell at collector-level prices. Among the more notable selections are Parliament's "Breakdown" and the Chi-Lites' "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to the People," as well as the Average White Band's smash "Pick Up the Pieces." There's a pair of restraining-order-baiting jams from the Smith Connection ("I'm Buggin' on Your Phone") and Holland & Dozier ("I'm Gonna Hijack Ya, Kidnap Ya, Take What I Want").
