Sold for an extremely low introductory price, the Giants of Jazz Sampler is a strong basic overview of the material licensed by the Italian Giants of Jazz label. Filling out the disc are numerous crucial cuts by many of the biggest names in jazz from the swing and bop eras. This is by no means a definitive microcosm of the jazz world during those periods, but as a very basic introduction for neophytes, the collection actually doesn't work too badly. Listeners get tracks like Coleman Hawkins' "Body and Soul," Dave Brubeck's "Take Five," Charlie Parker's "Lover Man," Duke Ellington's "Take the 'A' Train," Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia," Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight," Fats Waller's "Ain't Misbehavin'," and many more.
