This 1978 two-LP set combines together Jaki Byard's first two Prestige albums, both of which have since been reissued on CD. The pianist is heard in trios with bassist Ron Carter and either Roy Haynes or Pete LaRoca on drums. The repertoire is typically wide-ranging including "Garnerin' A Bit" (a tribute to Erroll Garner), "Giant Steps," a rare Byard outing on alto during "When Sunny Gets Blue," "Lullaby Of Birdland," "Hi-Fly" and James P. Johnson's "Excerpts From Yamecraw." When it was in print, this twofer served as an excellent introduction to the highly versatile Jaki Byard.
