AllMusic Review by

Unlike most releases featuring Dimitri from Paris, Get Down with the Philly Sound does not feature the veteran DJ's mixing. Instead, Dimitri merely selected the tracks on disc one -- an assortment of crossover classics and relatively cult club faves -- and provided nine of his remixes for the second disc. Each disc has its own level of appeal. Longtime fans of Philly soul, disco heads especially, will have most or all of the material on the first disc, from Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes' "Bad Luck" to Carl Bean's gay lib anthem "I Was Born This Way" (the latter of which was released on Motown but produced by Philly's Norman Harris and his Harris Machine). Odds are pretty strong, however, that few have heard Charles Mann's spectacular version of Steely Dan's "Do It Again" -- a hidden gem released on ABC, unearthed here. Dimitri's disc-two mixes of "The More I Get, the More I Want," "You Can't Hide from Yourself," "The Love I Lost," and six others are typically creative and reverent, if no substitute for any of the original 12" mixes.
