This is a handy collection of 15 of Gene Chandler's disco-era cuts (many of them previously unissued) for Carl Davis' Chi-Sound label, recorded between 1978 and 1983. The fact that the disc opens with the eight-minute 12" version of "Get Down" and the smoother "Does She Have a Friend for Me?" should be all the selling points that this CD needs for fans, but the producers have also included Chandler's demo version of "Get Down," a short, stripped-down rendition with more of a jazz feel. Not much of the rest actually comes up to the standard of those highlights -- "Skate (aka Miss Crazy Legs)" is nothing to write home about, apart from the fact that it's almost a rap song, "I'll Be There," a duet with Barbara Acklin, is the best of the previously unissued cuts, and "I'll Make the Living if You Make the Loving Worthwhile" holds up well enough, but apart from the two established hits, most of the rest is of purely historical and archival interest, diverting but not essential.
