AllMusic Review by

As its punning title suggests, Funky But! ropes in a series of new sounds and ideas that expand the Young-Holt Unlimited formula beyond the duo's signature syncopated groove -- elements of pop, bossa nova, and even electric jazz all percolate in the mix, creating an album that's both loose as a goose and tight as a drum. While originals like "The Funk Duck" crackle with energy, the covers are the unmistakable standouts: readings of the Beatles' "Lady Madonna" and "Eleanor Rigby" push Young and Holt into more complex melodic territory, while their sublime interpretation of the Bacharach/David-penned "The Look of Love" boasts a sophistication and languid sensuality absent from previous efforts.
