In the electronic community, the surge of chill-out and broken beat jazz compilations has left the market oversaturated and rife with tunes that are easily disposable and instantly clichéd and forgettable. Thankfully, there's none of that here, as Fueled for the Future is a massively ambitious five-CD box set that pulls together some of the most classic tunes from the Compost/Jazzanova/Sonar Kollektive imprints and scatters them in between previously unreleased material and remixes. The five selectors include Compost labelhead Michael Reinboth, Brooklyn-based hip-hop producer DJ Spinna, and Compost recording artists Kyoto Jazz Massive, among others. Results vary in tempo and tone from disc to disc, taking on deep house, broken beat, hip-hop, garage, trip-hop, Brazilian jazz, and all points in between that have defined the palette for the genre. And while five discs of the stuff can be daunting even for the most seasoned listener, even the less than stellar moments of this box set easily outshine the vast majority of inconsistent chill-out/downtempo compilations on the market. This should be requisite listening for anyone curious about the entire movement of nu jazz in the electronic music genre.
