Ravi Shankar was an international celebrity from the 1960s, due in part to his performances at American music festivals and his association with the Beatles (particularly George Harrison). Certainly the most well-known sitar player, Shankar dedicated himself to keeping alive the traditions of Indian classical music. On From India, he teams up with sarod musician Ali Akbar Khan. Three ragas are performed by the duo, accompanied by tambura and tablas. In simple terms, a raga is a pattern of notes used as a basis for improvisation. The trance-like improvisations of Shankar and Akbar Khan are subtle yet powerful. The music climaxes and subsides in waves, and the two musicians create an intricate instrumental conversation. Employing a wide modal palette and a dynamic, intense rhythmical confluence, these two masters take the listener on a journey through the soul of India.
