The concept: throw a bunch of contact mics into a dozen or so different refrigerators in various states of disrepair, shut the door, record the ensuing racket, and fashion an EP of music with those sounds as the only raw material. As limited in scope as such a project might sound, Fridge Trax is a fascinating listen. The range of sounds Pita and General Magic (Peter Rehberg, and Ramon Bauer and Andi Pieper, respectively, all of the Vinnese Mego label) are able to extract from such seemingly unmusical sources is nothing short of phenomenal, from blunt, funky breakbeats and warbling basslines to weird, shivery drones and echoing atmospherics.
