Foundation of Dub Review

by Stephen Cook

For listeners in search of a dub primer, this Trojan two-disc set is definitely worth checking out. Packed with 28 Bunny Lee-produced and King Tubby-tweaked cuts, Foundation of Dub lives up to its name with cornerstone dub sides by the originator and his best supplier of dread riddims. These mid-'70s tracks chronicle Tubby's development from the early days in the lab up through his apex years of 1975-1977. The stellar Aggrovators band provide the extra tough musical backbone, with the Barrett Brothers, Robbie Shakespeare, Tommy McCook, Jackie Mittoo, and Tony Chin manning the hardware. A worthy companion to the label's earlier King Tubby's Special double disc, Foundation of Dub ranks as one of the top dub collections available.
