Buffalo Tom ankled the Dinosaur Jr comparisons once and for all with their sophomore LP Birdbrain, and few songs better exemplified their rapid growth than "Fortune Teller," an earnest power ballad built on nuanced soft/loud dynamics that pack a punch far different -- but no less visceral -- than the slash-and-bash of their self-titled debut. In fact, its approach would serve as a template for many of Bill Janovitz's best songs over the years to come. This four-song single further spotlights the trio's new maturity via an acoustic version of the bitter "Stymied," which would reappear in electrified form on the follow-up, Let Me Come Over, and the lovely "Bumble-bee," a loose-limbed piano tune featuring bassist Chris Colbourn on vocals. A raucous live version of George Harrison's "Wah-Wah" rounds out this generous set.
