The first of three separately released EPs that would eventually form the Tryptych collection, Forest of Evil is in ways Demdike Stare at its most direct. Consisting of two long tracks named for the EP itself -- the first subtitled "Dusk" and the second "Dawn" -- Forest of Evil certainly starts off sounding like something unfriendly, with shards of skittering piano settling into a cool collage of rhythmic tones. As befits the duo's work, Forest of Evil defies categorization; the eventual flow into subharmonic bass pumps and echoed percussion pulses likewise can't be called dubstep so much as a riff on the possibilities of deep sonic production with electronic roots. "Dawn" begins on an even more ominous note, jagged piano notes leading into a quick, relentless drumming matched first by skittering cymbals, then an increasingly focused bass/percussion clip that finally falls into a shimmering loop of sound echoing the start of the album; again underpinned by a steadily relentless rhythmic throb. In both songs the continual interweaving of elements -- sickly sparkling prettiness, swathes of echoing depth, a shifting arrangement that never fully destabilizes -- helps further underscore Demdike Stare's own particular aesthetic in the tradition of U..K electronic duos, a distinct sonic voice of unease.
