Liz Gorrill, who opens this set by singing a very abstract rendition of "How Deep Is the Ocean?," otherwise sticks to solo piano. She may have been inspired initially by Lennie Tristano, but has long since developed her own style. All of the songs other than "How Deep Is the Ocean?" and "Stella By Starlight" are free improvisations and, other than "Shine the Warrior's Heart," the titles are all taken from the poetry of either Jalal-ud-Din Rumi or Colette Aboulkar-Muskat. The playing is often introspective although sometimes rather passionate, tends to wander a bit (with the music freely flowing), and contains some subtle surprises along the way. This set grows in interest with each listen.
