At the time Folk Music of Pakistan was released in 1951, the nation of Pakistan was four years old. Though it is a young nation, Pakistani culture reaches back some 5,000 years. "Dholak Geet" opens up the second side of the LP. It's a Punjabi folk song performed at festive occasions, with dholak, tabla, and a reedy aereophone -- perhaps a shannai -- providing a backdrop for Munwar Sultana and Iqbal Banso's vocals. Love songs, religious music, and dance tunes fill out the rest of the album. Liner notes are written by John Gonella, while the tracks were originally recorded by the Pakistani government.
