AllMusic Review by

Although often overlooked (his music is beyond bop but not really in the avant-garde and certainly not in the fusion genre), Ricky Ford was one of the top tenors to emerge during the '70s and early '80s. This Muse set finds him matched with a top-notch rhythm section (pianist John Hicks, bassist Walter Booker and drummer Jimmy Cobb) for "Take the Coltrane," Thelonious Monk's "ByeYa," Billy Strayhorn's "Chelsea Bridge" and four of Ford's originals including the mournful "Portrait of Mingus." It was a fine showcase for the up-and-coming tenor.
