Flip F'Real builds on the jazz tinges inherent in the Skatalites' music and the work of other ska bands like the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble; the Articles turn in a set of instrumental jazz/ska fusion consisting of about half group originals, plus several jazz compositions (Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Joe Henderson) and covers of the Skatalites and Laurel Aitken. There is a Latin-jazz feel to some of the tracks as well, although the Articles' rhythm section isn't quite as loose as contemporaries mining similar terrain. While not all of the tunes work as ska, the ones that do sound fresh and creative.
