AllMusic Review by

Given Eszter Balint's background in the New York City downtown scene, it's more than a little surprising that her debut album Flicker conjures not the sprawling urban skronk you'd expect but rather a dusty, lonesome atmosphere firmly rooted in country and folk. At times J.D. Foster's production strives to evoke a T-Bone Burnett-like sound which veers towards textural overkill, but the simplest songs -- "Amsterdam Crown," "Halfway to Texas" and "Still" among them -- possess a stark beauty and emotional heft.
