AllMusic Review by

Of all of the single LPs released of early Duke Ellington in the '60s and '70s, Flaming Youth was the definitive one, for it seemed to include the most exciting versions of each of Ellington's classics of the era. These versions of "Black and Tan Fantasy," "Jubilee Stomp," "The Mooche" and especially "East St. Louis Toodle-oo" have never been topped and, if only for the contributions of the unique trumpeter Bubber Miley, this set was a perfect introduction to early Ellington during the LP era.
