Four slices of lean, angular, and combustible punk rock from Ann Arbor, MI's Jaks, who managed to capture their considerable power as a live act on plastic with this EP. The lurching basslines and fragmented shards of guitar noise suggest a meeting point between the Laughing Hyenas and the Jesus Lizard, but with a teen punk energy that would outrun either band and a lyrical perspective that was theirs alone (and a lead singer strong enough to bring it across). The band's full-length album, Hollywood Blood Capsules, ultimately does a better job of capturing the full range of the band's abilities, but Five Nine more than merits a listen should you run across a copy.
