AllMusic Review by

Although bassist Michael Bisio gets first billing, this set of duets with Joe McPhee features McPhee (who sticks to tenor sax) as the main star. The music is avant-garde but has its melodic sections. McPhee is quite mournful and borderline violent on two versions of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman," yet is practically reverent on "Here's That Rainy Day" and is quite respectful on a version of "Going Home." The originals ("Running Out of Time," "Malachi," and "Walking Out") are fairly free and quite passionate. This set will not convert listeners strictly into straight-ahead jazz, but it is a fine all-round outing for McPhee and the supportive bassist Bisio.
