The second annual Central Illinois Jazz Festival (held in Decatur, IL, in February 1977) was fortunately partly recorded. A variety of different Dixieland bands are showcased in this four-LP series. Vol. 4 starts off with bassist Gene Mayl's Dixieland Rhythm Kings, a strong sextet featuring cornetist Ernie Carson, trombonist Rick Nelson, clarinetist Gene Bolen, and (on an overly dramatic "You Made Me Love You") singer Linda Wright. The Queen City Jazz Band (led by trombonist Alan Frederickson and including clarinetist Lee Peters) romps on three numbers, and the LP concludes with the Havens-Kittrell Mound City All Stars (with cornetist Danny Havens and pianist/singer Jean Kittrell). This spirited disc includes such numbers as "I'm Crazy 'Bout My Baby," "Louisiana," "Cornet Chop Suey," and "Just a Closer Walk with Thee."
