Three different Dixieland bands that performed at the 1977 Central Illinois Jazz Festival are featured on this LP. Of particular interest are the Tom Saunders-Bob Hirsch All Stars, who -- in addition to cornetist Saunders and pianist Hirsch -- feature clarinetist Chuck Hedges and drummer Barrett Deems, with Linda Wright taking the vocal on "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans." Also heard from are the Chicago Footwarmers (a septet most notable for featuring the young cornetist Bob Schulz) and drummer Monte Mountjoy's Misfits, a quartet with clarinetist Gene Bolen. The latter group is a touch more modern (playing "Blue Lou" and the nostalgic "I Remember When"), while the first two bands perform Dixieland standards such as "Riverboat Shuffle," "Squeeze Me," and "Canal Street Blues." This fun trad music is part of an obscure but worthy four-LP series.
