AllMusic Review by

Jean Ferrat was one of the last great figures of the French chanson tradition; he possessed a strong, rich voice and sang with an easy but assured tone, and was just as gifted as a songwriter, penning nearly all of his best-known songs, which reflected an unpretentious but artful poetic lyricism. But Ferrat was also a man of his times, rising to fame in the '60s with songs that reflected the political turmoil and social upheaval of the day as often as they dealt with affairs of the heart. Ferrat 2000 is an exhaustive overview of Ferrat's recorded work, collecting over 200 songs on 11 discs and offering a near-definitive portrait of the career of a giant of European popular song.
