AllMusic Review by

This CD reissue from the British Retrieval label has Jelly Roll Morton's first 24 piano solos. The earlier 20 have been issued several times by Milestone but it is convenient to have all 24 (dating from 1923-24 and 1926) together. Morton, who had a very distinctive style, was one of the early jazz giants and his piano playing (a major transition between ragtime and New Orleans jazz) tends to be a bit underrated. Highlights of this delightful set include "Grandpa's Spells," "Wolverine Blues," "Froggie Moore," "Shreveport Stomps" and two versions apiece of "King Porter Stomp" and "The Pearls." Classic music.
