Falling Down Laughing is just the sort of thing yo'ud expect from a bunch of young and ambitious instrumentalists from Seattle: a buoyant, energetic and eccentric work of jazz-rock fusion. Though bassist Arne Livingston's lines are amply fat and upfront, the disc is a bit heavy on the hipster-attuned ersatz funk and the emphasis on straight-ahead groove occasionally obscures the trio's bop/Eastern European/avant-garde leanings. That aside, Falling Down Laughing is a solid debut from a group who clearly finds joy in playing with noise but has enough old-school jazz chops to make for eminently listenable records.
