Birmingham, England's Theory of Everything didn't musically take note from their hometown compadre Ozzy Osbourne, but the fire behind their debut album Failure of Arithmetic burns with an earnest effort. It's a post-grunge mix of melancholic melodies and layered guitar work with room for a dash of pop sensibilities. Singer/guitarist Ben Richards is a hard-edged crooner; songs like "The Imposter" and "The Assassination of Beauty" swirl around similar dynamics of the Verve and Jeff Buckley. Failure of Arithmetic is a decent modern rock album, positioning Theory of Everything to do something bigger and brighter next time around.
