AllMusic Review by

This unusual set features Bud Shank (exclusively on flute) and pianist Bill Mays performing selections from Ravel, Debussy, Bach and Scriabin, in addition to Mays' five-part 27 1/2 minute "Suite For Flute And Piano." Despite the original sources, there is plenty of improvisation on the date, as Shank and Mays use the original melodies and chord changes as points of departure, treating the music with respect but also adding spontaneous adventure. The enjoyable set makes one regret that Shank has since given up the flute in favor of concentrating full-time on alto.
