AllMusic Review by

Even When Your Eyes Are Open heralded the last gasp for the original Levitation lineup before Terry Bickers' abrupt departure -- it's a major return to form after the downward spiral of preceding singles, briefly recapturing the evocative, serpentine psychedelia of their earliest and best singles. Jettisoning the bludgeoning overproduction that smothered Need for Not, the title track contrasts its moody, shimmering opening against a driving, primal chorus, while "Evergreen" is perhaps the most aptly-titled song the group ever cut, capturing a timelessness suggestive of U2 but without all the hubris. The closing "Mantra" is the clear highlight, however -- fusing Eastern-influenced drones and rhythms with the soaring, ethereal vocals of guest Yuka Ikushima, the song articulates the mystical uplift implicit in Levitation's name with a beauty unmatched by their previous efforts.
